Purpose

Since 2002, the Internet2 K20 Initiative has worked with representatives from state and regional R&E networks to conduct a biennial Sponsored Education Participant Group (SEGP) connectivity survey. Data is collected on the following organization types: K-12 organizations, library organizations, museums, science centers, performing arts centers, 4 year colleges and universities, community colleges, and public radio, television, and streaming media organizations. The results are published on the Internet2 K20 website http://k20.internet2.edu/connectivity.

Type:

K-12 School
Details:  Table 5, column 14, Public Schools total from "Number of educational institutions, by level and control of institution: Selected years, 1980-81 through 2006-07" was used as the K-12 total possible number. We added private schools in the total possible figure as they were reported by the SEGPs in the survey bringing the "total possible" number over 100,000 k-12 schools. Publicly funded K12 schools connect directly to the SEGP or through a K12 connecting organization such as a school district or intermediate unit. Private K12 schools are usually not connected to SEGPs. Therefore, they were not generally counted as part of the survey. While all of the reported K12 schools have connectivity to Internet2, local networking infrastructure may prevent schools from fully utilizing their reported bitrate numbers.

Museum
Details:  The K20 Initiative used a museums database compiled by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS). This database is considered to be the most comprehensive count of museums in the United States. The database combined the IMLS database of museums that have participated in IMLS programs, the print version of The Official Museum Directory (2000), and the Museums USA database provided by the State Museums Association. IMLS used a variety of techniques to eliminate duplicates and confirm listings. Subtracting the aquariums, planetariums, science and technology centers, zoos, arboretums, botanical gardens, and nature centers, the database contained 16413 organizations in 2006. IMLS thinks that approximately 5% of the entries are for non-museum organizations, leaving an estimated total of 15729 museums in the United States. Accounting for the 5% reduction, the 34 SEGP states contained 12993 museums. For the purposes of this survey, the following organizational categories were considered museums: art museums, children's museums, general museums, historic houses and sites, history museums, natural history and anthropology museums, and specialized museums.
