Celebrate the geography of China, experience the Lunar New Students will learn basic Chinese greetings and courtesies. They wil also identify common words, as well as culturally appropriate customs and behaviors.

Overview

Grades 3-6: Package of three (3) 45 minutes programs through Interactive Video Conferencing using H.323. Each program is designed with pre-and post-learning activities for teacher(s). In addition a cultural kit designed specifically for each program is included. Program 1: Welcome to China-Students will learn basic Chinese greetings and courtesies; using maps students will explore the diversity of the country and the misconceptions about a culture different from our own. Students will greet one another in Chinese and write simple characters. Program 2-Lunar New Year. The Chinese New Year is the most colorful and important of China's festivals. The New Year may occur as early as January 21, and as late as February 21. Students will identify the importance of celebrating the New Year. They will also understand traditions and rituals, including paper cutting, special decorations, foods, and activities. The Lantern Festival concludes the New Year celebration. Students will learn the tranditional meaning of lanterns in Chinese culture. Program 3: 2008 Summer Olympics Beijing is the site of the 2008 Summer Olympics, with the theme "One World, One Dream." Students will learn the symbolic meaning of the five mascots and gain an understanding of the importance to China of hosting the summer Olympics. They will experience a picture tour of Beijing, visiting both ancient and modern landmarks in the city. Presenter: Zhang Kun holds a doctorate from Huazhong Normal University, Educational College. Kun is a participant in the Kansas State Department of Education Visiting Teacher program. Prior to her arrival at the Service Center in Clearwtater she worked as an English teacher in the Internatinal Software College of Wuhan University and as secretary of Datang Cultural Company (division of Jinquan Company in Wuhan).
