Webinar Series Provides New Way to Learn Cloud Topics

As part of the upcoming CLASS Advanced Spring 2024 Cohort, Internet2 is hosting a series of hour-long webinars on current and emerging cloud topics relevant to the research and higher education community.

The new “What’s Up in the Cloud” series, which runs May 6-10, features webinars that are informal and intended to spur conversations about the cloud knowledge-skills gap among researchers.

We’ll explore various topics throughout the week, including research computing, cloud security, and artificial intelligence. The week will conclude with final presentations from the CLASS Advanced Spring 2024 Cohort participants. These presentations will showcase the fantastic work done by these individuals as they develop a community playbook for design patterns in research cyberinfrastructure workflows.

Monday, May 6: Project Eureka and Adaptive Computing at Scale 

Boyd Wilson, CEO at Omnibond and former software chief technology officer and executive director of Computing Facilities and Operations at Clemson University, will give an overview of High-Performance Computing capabilities and tools in the cloud. Wilson will further review how Project Eureka can facilitate large-scale computing for research.

Tuesday, May 7: A Practical Guide to Cloud Security on AWS

James Smith, cloud architect and faculty at the University of Notre Dame, will lead a discussion on securing an Amazon Web Services (AWS) environment and provide insight into key decision points when utilizing AWS.

Wednesday, May 8: Orchestrating a Successful AI Initiative on Campus

Get your questions about artificial intelligence (AI) governance, terminologies, and the higher ed AI landscape answered in this discussion led by Brandon Rich, associate director of Enterprise Data & Integration Services at the University of Notre Dame.

Thursday, May 9: Introduction to Jetstream – Accessible Cloud Computing for the National Science and Engineering Communities

Jetstream2 strives to increase equity and inclusivity in scientific discovery by broadening the reach of cyberinfrastructure. With its flexible, user-friendly cloud computing environment, Jetstream2 is designed for everyone, from researchers with minimal high-performance computing experience to software engineers looking for the latest in cloud-native approaches.

In this informative session, Jennifer Taylor, IT project manager and user support specialist at Indiana University, will present details about Jetstream2. Taylor’s webinar will include information about the National Science Foundation’s Advanced Cyberinfrastructure Coordination Ecosystem: Services & Support (ACCESS) program, which supports Jetstream2 so it can be offered to users at no cost.

We’ll also discuss the basics of Jetstream2 and the benefits of cloud computing, potential use cases, basic steps for getting started, and best practices for instance management.
